DEATH OF A PRESIDENT

      Mirth     September 13th, 2006 - 11:52 pm

A film of this title has won praise, both at the recent Toronto International Film Festival and from reviewers.

This from Variety:

Inflammatory more on a conceptual level than for the ideas it actually advances, the skillful docudrama “Death of a President” uses an imagined assassination of George W. Bush a year hence to explore how the American government might react to such an event and to post warning signs about the dangers of a rush to judgment in a climate all too conducive to instant finger-pointing. Shrewdly blending archival footage with staged material in ways that raise a host of separate issues, pic is calculatingly controversial on the face of things, designed to provoke gobs of media coverage and automatic outrage from those who haven’t seen it. Such attention should assure theatrical release in key territories, although best prospects lie in cable (at least in the U.S.) and homevid.

This from al-Jazeera:

It certainly will not cheer the man himself, but a new film depicting the assassination of George Bush is already proving to be successful.

Death of a President, opened to a warm reception at the Toronto international film festival on Sunday and has now sold its US distribution rights for $1 million.

The fictional British television film is shot in the style of a traditional documentary and uses footage of the US president during three visits to Chicago to create the scenes that lead up to the president being shot.

Redundant title huh?

Over the weekend, our lying liar of a Vice President lied about not having seen the Senate Intelligence Committee report debunking the lying claim that Iraq had any dealings with Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The problem is, he would have had to have seen it…

This morning on Meet the Press, Cheney repeatedly cited Zarqawi as the link between pre-war Iraq and al-Qaeda. When Tim Russert mentioned the Senate Intelligence Committee report, Cheney said he “hadn’t seen it.”

Common sense would lead us to believe that he is lying for several reasons:

1. While the Senate Intelligence Committee report was released publicly on Friday, it has been available to people with the appropriate security clearance for a year.

2. As President of the Senate, all findings by Senate Committees are given to his staff.

3. Even if he doesn’t read every report, it is not plausible that he would not have read this one, since it deals with the biggest issue in politics; the war in Iraq, foreign policy and intelligence.

They won’t stop lying until you stop believing.

A life’size replica of a Guantanamo Bay detainee has been placed in Disneyland by “guerrilla artist” Banksy.

The hooded figure was placed inside the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride at the California theme park last weekend.

It is understood to have remained in place for 90 minutes before the ride was closed down and the figure removed.

A spokeswoman for Banksy said the stunt was intended to highlight the plight of terror suspects at the controversial detention centre in Cuba.

ITALY AND LIBYA ACCUSED OF ABUSE

      Mirth     September 13th, 2006 - 1:26 pm
_41734400_migrants203afp.jpg Italy and Libya have been accused of abusing the human rights of African migrants trying to enter the EU.
The New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) group says Libyan and Italian authorities have forcibly repatriated thousands of foreigners.
Some of those faced possible persecution or torture in their home countries, HRW says in a new report.
The group says the Italian deportations took place under former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
The detailed 135-page report documents how the Libyan authorities forcibly repatriated about 145,000 foreigners between 2003 and 2005.
Many of them were submitted to beatings and arbitrary arrest.
Those forcibly returned to Eritrea or Somalia faced possible persecution or torture, Human Rights Watch said.
