THE WALL OF HATE

“The Palestinian people, including the refugees of 1948 and 1967, are well deserving of land, as stated under multiple UN resolutions. Resolution 194 explicitly states, “The refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbors should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date.” The resolution continues to state, “the Governments or authorities responsible” should compensate “those choosing not to return and for loss of or damage to property.” In 1967, Resolution 242 called for Israel to withdraw from “territories occupied” and this call was reaffirmed in Resolution 338.”

Another Bush F*ck-up…

Federal reading program gets ‘F’

BlueHerald ImageBy Stephanie Banchero, Tribune staff reporter.
The Associated Press contributed to this report
Published September 23, 2006

A blistering internal review of President Bush’s pet reading program for young children has found that the program was beset by mismanagement and questionable decision-making.

The audit, released Friday by the Office of Inspector General–an independent arm of the U.S. Department of Education–calls the program’s credibility into question and charges that department officials stacked panel review committees with people who had clear conflicts of interest.

It also charges that the program managers may have broken the law by trying to steer districts and states into using curricula favored by program managers.

In one e-mail, according to the audit, after the director of Reading First found out that states were using a reading program he did not approve of, he wrote to staff members:

“They are trying to crash our party and we need to beat the [expletive] out of them in front of all the other would-be party crashers who are standing on the front lawn waiting to see how we welcome these dirtbags,” the official wrote.

The program manager was recently replaced, officials said.

The new report found the department:

- Botched the way it picked a panel to review grant applications, raising questions over whether grants were approved as the law requires.

- Failed in screening grant reviewers to discover that six of them had a clear conflict based on their industry connections.

- Did not let states see the comments of experts who reviewed their applications.

- Required states to meet conditions that weren’t part of the law.

I don’t think anyone is surprised. We pretty much knew beforehand that this was going to wind up in utter failure. It’s what we’ve come to expect from a man with an anti-midas touch.

ANTI-WAR PROTESTS IN MANCHESTER

270B9DCAD60448F3871EF1C66BECD1ED.jpgUp to 20,000 demonstrators have marched through the northern English city of Manchester to protest the presence of British troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The protests on Saturday took place on the eve of the governing Labour Party’s annual gathering.

Protesters packed Manchester’s central Albert Square on Saturday before setting off on a march around the conference centre where delegates will meet.

The five-day Labour meeting begins on Sunday.

A few hundred metres from a hotel where Blair and other party officials will stay, families of some of the British soldiers killed in Iraq set up a “peace camp” of a half dozen tents, where they intended to camp out in hopes of getting the prime minister’s attention.

The Stop the War Coalition, which organised the march, estimated about 30,000 people were participating.

Police initially estimated the crowd at 10,000, then doubled that figure.

THOUSANDS RALLY AGAINST POPE IN MIDEAST

JERUSALEM (AP) - Thousands of Muslim worshippers staged marches against Pope Benedict XVI in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza on Friday, waving green Hamas banners and denouncing him as a “coward” and an “agent of the Americans.”

The demonstrations in the Middle East, as well as smaller rallies in Pakistan and Malaysia, came as Benedict invited representatives of Muslim countries to meet Monday at his summer residence, the Vatican said.

The Vatican has been seeking to defuse anger across the Muslim world that followed the pope’s remarks about Islam last week in Germany.

Benedict cited the words of a Byzantine emperor who characterized some of the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad as “evil and inhuman,” particularly “his command to spread by the sword the faith.”

CONGRESS UNDERSCORES BUSH’S WEAKNESS

In my neighbourhood in Washington, George W Bush’s presidency is already_42119068_bushtroubledap203.jpg over.

You can see it on the T’shirts, such as the one that simply says: “20 January 2009″, the day Mr Bush will step down and hand power to whoever wins the 2008 election.

And you can see it on the bumper stickers.

I have already seen a car with “Clinton/Obama 2008” plastered on its rear, articulating the hope of many liberals that Hillary Clinton will run for president, with the mixed-race first-term Senator Barack Obama as her vice-presidential choice.

FARRAKHAN HANDS OVER REINS

This article caught my eye. My daughter went to school with some Farrakhans……..suffice it to say their behavior didn’t indicate they were any kind of religious.

Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan released a letter Friday urging the organization’s executive board to solve the group’s problems without him while he is being treated for “serious infection and inflammation.”

In a letter dated Sept. 11 and published in the current edition of the Nation of Islam’s newspaper, The Final Call, Farrakhan said he has been in pain since earlier this year and has symptoms similar to those he experienced during his 1998 battle with prostate cancer.

Nation of Islam officials did not return calls for comment. But some religious leaders and others familiar with the organization said they don’t think the announcement signals that he is about to step down from leadership of the group after almost 30 years.

FRENCH INVESTIGATE REPORT BIN LADEN DEAD

The French defense ministry on Saturday called for an internal investigation of the leak of an intelligence document that raises the possibility that Osama bin Laden may have died of typhoid in Pakistan a month ago but said the report of the death remained unverified.

“The information defused this morning by the l’Est Republicain newspaper concerning the possible death of Osama bin Laden cannot be confirmed,” a Defense Ministry statement said.

The daily newspaper for the Lorraine region in eastern France printed what it described as a confidential document from the French foreign intelligence service DGSE citing an uncorroborated report from Saudi secret services that the leader of the al-Qaida terror network had died.

U.S. BEST SELLER, THANKS TO HUGO CHAVEZ

heg.jpg

All the authors currently clamoring for a seat on Oprah Winfrey’s couch might do well to send copies of their books to the latest publishing tastemaker: Venezuela’s president, Hugo Chavez.

Ever since Mr. Chavez held up a copy of a 301-page book (Hegemony or Survival) by Noam Chomsky, the linguist and left-wing political commentator, during a speech at the United Nations on Wednesday, sales of the book have climbed best’seller lists at Amazon.com and BN.com, the online site for the book retailer Barnes & Noble, and booksellers around the country have noted a spike in sales.
