Look for the EU arms embargo to be lifted……
BEIJING When the remains of Lieutenant Colonel Du Zhaoyu were returned to China from Lebanon last month, the country’s leadership sent a clear signal that his sacrifice in the UN peacekeeping force there was appreciated.
State-controlled media showed President Hu Jintao and other top civilian and military officials attending Du’s funeral on Aug. 4 at Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in Beijing, where they paid tribute to the UN military observer who was killed with three others in an Israeli airstrike on southern Lebanon.
Du was the eighth Chinese peacekeeper to die serving with the United Nations since 1988, but Beijing appears willing to bear such casualties and accept the cost of an expanding military role in these complex and sometimes dangerous missions.
