This detainee bill is going to come back to bite us in the ass…..over and over and over and over. It’s already begun!
UNITED NATIONS - Some countries try to rebut criticism of how they treat prisoners by saying they are only following the U.S. example on handling terrorism suspects, a U.N. human rights expert said Monday.
Manfred Nowak, the United Nations investigator on torture, told a news conference that “all too frequently” governments responded to criticism about their jails by saying they handled detainees the same way the United States did.
“The United States has been the pioneer of human rights and is a country that has a high reputation in the world,” Nowak said. “Today, other governments are kind of saying, ‘But why are you criticizing us; we are not doing something different than what the United States is doing.’ ”
He said nations such as Jordan tell him, “We are collaborating with the United States, so it can’t be wrong if it is also done by the United States.”

Gee Lindsey……you’re really going out on a limb there…..NEAR CHAOS??? You gotta be kidding me. I am sick of Lindsey Graham. Always doing the I’m not a tool in George Bush’s toolbox dance, and then ending up showing everyone he is……a tool. Alot of lip service, and in the end, he always ends up the rubberstamper. The tool. The sheep. One word for ya Lindsey…..shuddup. Enough lip service from you.
Under election-year pressure to change course in Iraq, the Bush administration said Monday there are no plans for dramatic shifts in policy or for ultimatums to Baghdad to force progress.
Just two weeks before the Nov. 7 elections that will determine whether Republicans retain control of Congress, the White House tried to calm political anxieties about deteriorating security in Iraq. Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers are calling on President Bush to change his war plan.
“We’re on the verge of chaos, and the current plan is not working,” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said in an Associated Press interview. U.S. and Iraqi officials should be held accountable for the lack of progress, said Graham, a Republican who is a frequent critic of the administration’s policies.
Asked who in particular should be held accountable - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, perhaps, or the generals leading the war - Graham said: “All of them. It’s their job to come up with a game plan” to end the violence.

86 U.S. CASUALTIES AND 1 U.S. MISSING OR CAPTURED THIS MONTH. 2,799 U.S. CASUALTIES TO DATE
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A U.S. military spokesman said Tuesday there had been no word on the fate of a U.S. Army solider reported missing in Baghdad, as troops continued door-to-door searches in the central Karradah district.
U.S. and Iraqi forces threw a security cordon around Karradah on Monday night and Iraqis seeking to pass through the downtown area on Tuesday were turned away at roadblocks. Army Kiowa OH-58 reconnaissance helicopters were seen repeatedly circling the area in pairs.
U.S. soldiers patrolling Karradah showed photocopies of the man’s photograph to residents in a search for leads.
The missing soldier’s name and other personal details have not been officially released, although American troops who raided Baghdad’s al-Furat TV on Monday said they were looking for an abducted American officer of Iraqi descent who went to join family members in Karradah.

But afterward, even Dan McLaughlin, Nelson’s spokesman, said, “She didn’t embarrass herself.” WELL………that’s a first! I’m so very very angry that Bill Nelson voted for the Detainee Bill. I have absolutely no respect for him whatsoever……. but my vote will be against Katherine Celestial Drops Harris. Hopefully next time around……a new Democrat will step up to the plate to challenge Nelson.
DAVIE · She’s been lampooned for her clothing and makeup by late-night comics. She’s made headlines for infusing religion into her Senate race. She’s been rejected by members of her own party. But Katherine Harris stepped away from all that in her first public debate Monday against U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson.
The debate at Nova Southeastern University in Davie offered the fare of most political debates for a seat in Congress this election: discussion of the Iraq war, nuclear weapons in North Korea, global warming, property insurance and ethics.
Harris, the Republican candidate, took a no-nonsense approach, appearing business-like and strategically striding across the stage, using gestures for emphasis, playing to her audience. Harris is trailing far behind in the polls, and had the most to gain from the first of only two public debates in this race.
