BARTOW - Circuit Judge Dale Durrance spoke sympathetically to Brian Doyle, the Homeland Security media official caught in an explicit online chat with a fictional 14-year-old Polk County girl.

After hearing five wrenching hours of testimony Friday, Durrance said he agreed that Doyle had been plagued for much of his life by a sense of “worthlessness.” He also said Doyle’s friends and family had proved that feeling was undeserved.

“You’ve done a lot of good in your lifetime,” Durrance said.

None of it mattered, though.

Moments later, Durrance sentenced Doyle to five years in state prison and 10 years of sex offender probation. It was the maximum Durrance was allowed to give Doyle under the terms of a plea agreement reached in September.
