Australian PM’s Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Iraq

Another sneaky guy…he has to sneak in and out of Iraq. They should leave him there, and we should move the White House offices over there….. outside the Green Zone. Let them stay there until they end this shit.

SYDNEY (AFP) - A plane carrying Australian Prime Minister John Howard was forced to make an emergency landing in Iraq after the cabin began to fill with smoke and fumes shortly after take-off, defence officials said Sunday.

Howard was on a secret visit to southern Iraq when the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) C-130 Hercules was forced back to Tallil airbase late Saturday, the RAAF said.

The plane, which was carrying 30 people including the head of the Australian defence force Air Marshal Angus Houston, was on its way to Baghdad when the cabin filled with smoke and fumes soon after taking off from Tallil.

The pilot turned the plane around as it reached an altitude of about 1,500 metres (4,900 feet), forcing passengers to wear oxygen masks as the plane dropped into a rapid descent.

Smoke was billowing from the C-130 when it touched down at Tallil some 300 kilometres (180 miles) south of Baghdad and troops rushed to evacuate the prime minister, reports said.

Today’s Protests

peacemarch.jpg
Protesters against the war in Iraq participate in the ‘March on the Pentagon’ in Washington, March 17, 2007. Thousands of anti-war protestors, some carrying yellow and black signs reading “U.S. out of Iraq now!” marched toward the Pentagon on Saturday, one of a number of protests held or planned around the country and the world. More on the protests here, hereand here. I just did a quick google search and didn’t see much in the American newspapers, but I could be wrong. I want to thank each and every protester around the world for marching today!! I wish I could have.

Most articles say “thousands” of protesters. The Yahoo article says there were 10’s of thousands

The Wind That Shakes the Barley

I sometimes joke the beauty of a Celtic song is in direct proportion to its body count. If you want to hear some heart-rending melancholia, head for the Scottish Highlands or the Emerald Isles. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, here’s a good one, “The Wind That Shakes the Barley.” The singer is Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance. Here’s one set of the lyrics.

My copy of the The Irish Songbook says:

This is an excellent example of many songs that serve both as love lyrics and rebel song. The scene described refers to the 1783 rising. The words are the work of Robert Dwyer Joyce, a professor of English Literature at Catholic University at Dublin. In danger of arrest for rebel activities, Joyce fled to the United States. He later returned to Ireland and died in Dublin in 1883.

Meanwhile, I-m looking forward to seeing the 2006 film, The Wind That Shakes the Barley, soon to hit the United States. Directed by Ken Loach, it stars Cillian Murphy and won the Palme D-Or at Cannes. Here’s the official website and here’s the trailer:

Recall of Pet Food

puppy_013.jpg
I know alot of you have pets, as I do. And if anything happened to them you’d be devastated. This is an important notice!!!!

WASHINGTON (AP) — A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.

“At this juncture, we’re not 100 percent sure what’s happened,” said Paul Henderson, the company’s president and chief executive officer. However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.

‘Cuts and gravy’ food sold in cans, pouches recalled
The recall covers the company’s “cuts and gravy” style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between December 3 and March 6 throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Co., Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.

Menu Foods said it makes pet foods for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.

Proctor & Gamble announced Friday the recall of specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet food products made by Menu Foods but sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands. The recalled products bear the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, P&G said.

Menu Foods’ three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kansas, and Pennsauken, New Jersey, Henderson said.

Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness.

“To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product,” Henderson said.

FDA also working to target brands
The company alerted the Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said. The FDA was working to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said.

Menu Foods is majority-owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada.

Henderson said the recall would cost the company the Canadian equivalent of $26 million to $34 million.

Below are lists of specific brands recalled by Menu Foods, in addition to Proctor & Gamble’s recall of certain Iams and Eukanuba products. Menu Brands lists the brands on its Web site, www.menufoods.com, and advises consumers to call 1-866-895-2708 for more information.

Tubby quiets critics (for now) with tourney win

Kentucky holds off Villanova 67-58 to earn date with top’seeded Kansas

CHICAGO - Tubby Smith was walking off the floor when a fan called out, “Yeah, Tubby! You rock!”

Nothing like another Kentucky win in the NCAA tournament to get the critics off of Smith’s back. For one day, at least.

Randolph Morris finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, and eighth’seeded Kentucky flexed its muscle in the second half for a 67-58 victory over ninth’seeded Villanova in the West Regional on Friday night.
