A few stories you may have missed over the Memorial Day Weekend
A drug believed to be cocaine was found in Lindsay Lohan’s wrecked Mercedes after the free-falling star crashed in Beverly Hills yesterday following a wild night of partying.
A “usable amount” of a substance tentatively identified as cocaine was recovered from her car by responding officers, Beverly Hills Police Lt. Mitch McCann said.
The actress was arrested and charged with DUI after officers tracked her down to a local hospital, where she was admitted for minor injuries, Beverly Hills Sgt. Mike Foxen told The Post.
Lohan had been partying until 2:30 a.m. with friends at the trendy Hollywood nightclub Les Deux, sources said, and then went to a private party in the Hollywood Hills.
LOS ANGELES - “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” reaped a $17 million bounty during its initial screenings, a box office tracking company said Friday.
The third film in the popular “Pirates” franchise racked up the biggest early premiere numbers ever, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers.
It also set a record with the largest number of debut screens, at 4,362.
It remains to be seen whether the film, from The Walt Disney Co., can break other records, including best Memorial Day weekend.
Disney made a last-minute decision to premiere the film domestically on Thursday evening instead of the traditional Friday opening.
About 3,000 or so theaters had 8 p.m. showings, with many opening additional theaters to accommodate the crowds, according to Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney.
LOS ANGELES - A federal judge said he will dismiss Carol Burnett’s $2 million copyright infringement lawsuit over the use of her cleaning woman character in the animated series “Family Guy.”
U.S. District Judge Dean Pregerson said in a written tentative ruling Friday that he planned to dismiss the lawsuit against 20th Century Fox. He will issue a final ruling later.
The 74-year-old comedian sued the studio in March, contending that the Fox show didn’t have her permission to include her Charwoman character in an April 2006 episode.
The episode portrayed the character as a cleaning woman in a sex shop and also used a version of the theme music to her old TV series without permission, the lawsuit claimed.
At the time, the studio said it was surprised by the lawsuit over what amounted to about an 18’second scene.
A call to 20th Century Fox Television spokesman Chris Alexander on Friday was not immediately returned.
NY shoe store gets its own ZIP code
NEW YORK - Saks Fifth Avenue says its new shoe department is so big that it’s getting its own ZIP code.
The Manhattan store is revamping its shoe department, and when it moves from the fourth floor to an 8,500’square-foot space on the eighth floor in August, customers will be able to send mail to 10022-SHOE.
“We believe it’s such a big move for us it deserves its own ZIP code,” Saks spokeswoman Lesley Langsam Kennedy said Thursday. “We wanted to make it a destination.”
The retailer worked with the U.S. Postal Service on the new ZIP code - but only the last four characters, which aren’t necessary when mailing something, are specialized. The rest of the neighborhood shares 10022.
Saks operates 54 stores in 25 states and two stores in the Middle East.
Los Angeles (E! Online) - As remorseful as she might be, Brandy apparently doesn’t think much of the lawsuits leveled against her.
In court documents filed Wednesday, the 28-year-old singer “specifically denies each and every allegation” in the wrongful death complaints filed against her by relatives of the woman who died of injuries suffered in a four-car collision that the plaintiffs claim was caused by Brandy Norwood.
The December 30 accident occurred on Los Angeles’ 405 freeway when Brandy’s Land Rover rear-ended a Toyota Carolla being driven by 38-year-old Awatef Aboudihaj, who in turn hit 82-year-old Donald Lit’s Toyota Tercel. That caused Aboudihaj’s car to bounce into a different lane, where she was broadsided by 50-year-old Mallory Ham’s vehicle. Aboudihaj died of her injuries at a nearby hospital the following evening.
The California Highway Patrol has recommended that the L.A. City Attorney’s Office charge the Moesha star with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, but prosecutors have not yet decided whether to file charges. Investigators determined that Brandy wasn’t under the influence of alcohol or any other substance at the time of the crash, nor was she talking on her cell phone or similarly distracted.
However, that hasn’t stopped the legal floodgates from opening. Three wrongful death suits have been filed, one by Aboudihaj’s parents, one representing the deceased’s two children, and, earlier this month, one by Aboudihaj’s husband, Maroune Hdidou, for the loss of “support, maintenance, solace, moral support, companionship and comfort” that his “faithful and dutiful” spouse provided him.
