NEW YORK - A new survey of American sexual behavior found the average man has had seven partners in his lifetime while the average adult woman has notched four.

The computer survey by the National Center for Health Statistics noted that the high end of the scale found 29 percent of males and 9 percent of women claiming 15 or more partners.

The New York Daily News said other tidbits from the survey of 6,237 heterosexual adults between the ages of 20 and 59 included 9 percent of adults remaining virgins into their 20s, while 2.3 percent fell into the 40-year-old category.

The newspaper also reported 83 percent of men over the age of 50 boasted of having sex at least once a month.
