Top political action committees and top lobbyists have been writing bigger than normal checks to benefit the campaigns of various Republican Senators who have formed a joint fundraising committee, the 2007 Senator’s Classic Committee. Some PACs have written checks for $23,000 and a top Washington lobbyist has a written check for $9,600.
The committee reported raising $776,150 and spending $483,131 in the second quarter, leaving cash on hand of $293,019. The committee gave $402,500 to federal candidates.
Large donors included Bryce Harlow (whose occupation/employer was shown as “information requested”) $9,600; J. David Hoppe of Quinn Gillespie $7,500; Hazen Marshall of the Nickles Group $7,500; Employees of Northrop Grumman Corp PAC $23,000; Exxon Mobil Corp. PAC $21,500; Koch PAC $15,000; NSSGA ROCKPAC $22,500; ConocoPhillips Spirit PAC $15,000; American Dental PAC $15,000; Automotive Free Int-l Trade Pac $15,000; Dean Foods Co PAC $15,000; Foundation Coal PAC $15,000; UTC PAC $15,000; and $7,500 from 57 other PACs; among others.
The second quarter report shows promotional supplies bought from the Belle Haven Golf Shop in June, but no golf course green fees. The committee paid $53,375 to the E.M. Rahal Company of Washington, D.C. for fundraising consulting. Edward Rahal was the former finance director at the National Republican Senatorial Committee and a former lobbyist for the American Continental Group. Rahal referred questions about the Classic to the office of Senator John Warner.
In June the committee gave funds to various candidates; Alexander $21,000; Chambliss $16,500; Cochran $24,000; Coleman $19,000; Collins $18,000; Craig $23,000; Dole $15,000; Enzi $30,000; Inhofe $18,000; Sessions $23,000; Gordon Smith $14,500; Graham $19,000; McConnell $23,000; Roberts $28,000; Domenici $16,000; Warner $39,000; Stevens $16,000; Sununu $14,500; and Cornyn $25,000.
