Please excuse my excitement. I’m originally from Chicago, have always been a disappointed Cubs fan. So this, for now, is major news. - JS
CHICAGO (AP) - Matt Murton got the call to come back from the minors less than a week ago and already he’s helped the Chicago Cubs climb into first place.
GAME REPORT: Cubs 5, Phillies 4
Murton raced home on Brett Myers’ bases-loaded wild pitch in the ninth inning Wednesday night, sending the Cubs to a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies and lifting them to the top of the NL Central by one percentage point.
“Some things in the past we got to leave behind us,” said Murton, who had a 39-game stint at Triple-A. “It’s just a great feeling to be around a winning ball club and have a chance to play in October.”
The Cubs, who were 8 1/2 games behind on June 23, finally overcame the Milwaukee Brewers - at least for a day. Chicago’s win, coupled with the Mets’ 8-5 win at Milwaukee, puts the Cubs ahead .
“You can’t make too much out of it on the first of August,” Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. “We’ve got a lot of baseball to play. We can’t get caught up in it.”
Chicago stands 57-49 (.538) while Milwaukee is 58-50 (.537).
