OPINION: Bush Wrong On History
Buck August 27th, 2007 - 11:03 amI can understand how a coke’snorting, amoral cheerleader-of-a-president that spent a bigger part of his service AWOL could get a few things wrong. Well, more than a few. What I don’t understand is how so many members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars could applaud this man. It makes no sense! Was anyone in the audience that day listening?
Jack Jacobs does an excellent job of cleaning Bush’s clock. I do take exception to one point Mr. Jacobs continues to bring up during the article. He seems to think that the majority wants an instant pullout of all troops, all at once. Not true, Jack. The majority realizes the dangers involved in a quick pullout. A slow, calculated drop-down of troop levels is whats called for here. Starting NOW!
Bush wades into water over his head…again
We should not abandon Iraq, but Bush’s argument is demonstrably false
Last week, with about three weeks to go before General David Petraeus renders his report on progress in Iraq, President Bush delivered a speech in which he tried valiantly to engender support for American strategy there. The audience, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, was enthusiastically supportive.
[...]But when Bush invoked the specters of past wars to support his assertions, he waded into water well over his head.
Among other things, he suggested that the proximate cause of the genocide in Cambodia was our withdrawal from Vietnam. Absolute nonsense. The Khmer Rouge’s murderous regime established itself long before the American combat presence in Vietnam ended.
Mr. Bush also opined that the post-war orgy of retribution in Vietnam was the proximate result of our withdrawal as well. This, too, is a fabrication.

In flipping through radio channels yesterday, I caught part of a local talk show, (WNOX - Knoxville, TN), with someone making the statement: “President Clinton owes his success to being an amoral president.”
Typical. Knoxville is very conservative. Necks don’t get much redder than this!
Which brings me to my very own quote: “President Bush owes his FAILURES to being an amoral president.”
How’s that?

I’ve seen alot of signs on vehicles, in yards, all over Chicago. Impeach signs…all kinds of anti Bush stuff. One guy had a big delivery truck parked in front of a house. It was Friday night, maybe going to leave it there for the weekend. It had Impeach Bush and Anti War messages plastered all over it. Did my heart good.

You’re dead on with criticism of Jacobs. “withdraw immediately” obviously means as quickly as it can be safely done, but to set the wheels in motion. Jacobs throws out one hell of a straw man there. His criticism of Bush is on target, but it’s pretty sad he’s peddling the same old BS line on advocates of withdrawal.
