Today’s Non-Story

…the campaign called [me] three times, demanding that the story be killed. …the campaign complained that Babb misrepresented the story she planned to do.

-Charlie Tuggle, associate professor at UNC

Yes. This is what we call a non’story. John Edwards should be able to run his campaign anywhere he chooses. For someone to insist it should be run in an area “that might reflect his campaign platform of fighting poverty” is just being small-minded and silly! We’ve often seen similar arguments applied to VP Al Gore in his fight to raise awareness of global warming. “How can he care about the environment while using up more electricity in that large mansion of his?” they would ask. It’s all about dissing the messenger, when you can’t diss the message.

…rather than a location that might reflect his campaign platform of fighting poverty.” I’m surprised Carla didn’t write a piece about how Edwards’ campaign insisted on using television and radio to get his message out to the poor, instead of the more appropriate, and much less costly, mass broadcasting via smoke signals!

Edwards campaign tries to spike student’s story

John EdwardsRALEIGH, North Carolina (AP) - A University of North Carolina professor says that John Edwards‘ campaign demanded that he pull a student reporter’s television story about the location of the campaign’s headquarters.

In it, second-year master’s student Carla Babb questions whether it’s appropriate for Edwards to base his operations out of his affluent hometown of Chapel Hill - also home to the university - rather than a location that might reflect his campaign platform of fighting poverty.

The Edwards campaign had no comment on the professor’s specific contentions, but called the issue “silly.”
