Praise The Lord, And Vote For Huckabee!

      Buck     December 19th, 2007 - 6:46 pm

A 1954 law forbids [in-church] partisan political activity that aims to help, or hurt, candidates for public office. Such behavior would put a church’s tax-exempt status in jeopardy.

From The Associated Press:

“Huckabee, who has a tiny campaign and a shoestring budget, has a network of supporters independent of his campaign who are spreading the word through their churches.”

If Mike Huckabee has such blatant disregard for law, (which appears to be a growing theme), then how can he be allowed to serve as president of the United States? (I know… think Bush!)

Huckabee Counts on Pastors for Iowa Help

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republican Mike Huckabee, the former Baptist preacher, is depending on more than a leap of faith to win the Iowa caucuses.

Leading in polls, Huckabee is determined to make up for his skimpy organization in the state by enlisting national evangelical Christian supporters to rev up Iowa pastors and coax voters to the Jan. 3 caucuses.

Word of mouth in churches and among Christian groups can be a powerful force in Iowa politics. Christian believers make up the core of Huckabee’s support in the state, said Rick Scarborough, a well-known Texas preacher who has endorsed the former Arkansas governor, though he adds that “it’s not his only constituency.”

Scarborough heads Vision America, one of several groups trying to help Huckabee. The groups - some overtly religious, some not - are using a variety of tactics, all independent of Huckabee’s campaign:

- Automated phone calls to recruit volunteers.
- Voter registration drives.
- Informal e-mails and chats in church foyers and pews.

Dan Gilgoff, of USA Today, states… unfortunately:

“David Barton, an evangelical activist who was hired by the Republican National Committee to reach thousands of pastors in the 2004 campaign, says he hasn’t heard of a single church losing its tax-exempt status in his nearly 20 years of political activism. If he hasn’t, who has?”

Well isn’t that just great.

Gitmo Gonzo in on Tape Destruction Discussion

      QuestionGirl     December 19th, 2007 - 9:37 am

No surprise here……and if asked about it he’ll say “I don’t recall.”

gonzalez_torture.pngAlberto Gonzales and other top White House lawyers took part in discussions about destroying CIA videotapes of interrogation of two al Qaeda suspects, the New York Times reported Tuesday night on its Web site.

Alberto Gonzales was White House counsel until early 2005, when he became U.S. attorney general.

At least four top White House lawyers discussed the issue with the CIA between 2003 and 2005, according to current and former administration and intelligence officials the newspaper did not identify.

Gonzales, the former attorney general who served as White House counsel until early 2005, was among those who took part, the officials said.

Also involved, according to the Times’ sources, were David Addington, who was the counsel to Vice President Dick Cheney and is now his chief of staff; John Bellinger III, who until January 2005 was the senior lawyer at the National Security Council; and Harriet Miers, who succeeded Gonzales as White House counsel.

One former senior intelligence official told the Times there had been “vigorous sentiment” among some top White House officials to destroy the tapes.

Right-Wing Cartoon Watch #27 (11/12/07 - 12/16/07)

      Batocchio     December 19th, 2007 - 7:52 am

Comedians, artists and certainly political cartoonists tend to possess an anti-authoritarian, skeptical, irreverent streak. This makes the staunchly conservative cartoonist an especially odd bird.

Right-Wing Cartoon Watch seeks to highlight far right cartoons, but also document the broader range of opinion from conservative cartoonists on the hot issues of the day. While a primary goal is to challenge GOP talking points and fallacies, we also seek to celebrate the fine American tradition of editorial cartooning - and have a little fun in the process.

Which cartoonists dare to criticize their own party? Who seems to literally illustrate GOP talking points? Who are their favorite targets? Who mocks liberals - and who seems to truly hate them? Who’s funny? Who’s independently minded and who’s a hack? Read, and decide, for yourself!

Welcome to the 27th installment of RWCW, covering four weeks. Everything’s coming up roses in Iraq, they say! Every time we torture someone, another 9/11 is averted! You can’t trust intelligence that doesn’t urge us to bomb the enemy du jour! And Gore Edwards Obama Hillary Clinton is the anti-Christ… or at least, a woman.

Pace yourself, now! And skip whatever you like! Too much wingnuttiness consumed too quickly can lead to toxic overload!
