Oh man…….words escape me.

Yesterday there were a flurry of reports about an Iraqi soldier shooting and killing two US soldiers during a joint mission. Reported as the first time this has happened, the reports in the American press may tell only half the story.

The rather startled reports repeated assertions that the attack was for “reasons unknown.” Iraqi reports say the US soldiers were kicking a pregnant Iraqi woman when shot. Here’s what we-ve been able to learn so far.

On December 26, two American soldiers were killed during a “joint Iraqi-U.S. patrol undertaking security duty in al-Haramat area, western Mosul.”

I’ve had my Mom with me for about three months. She spends about half the year with me. She’s 83. Today I took her to the doctor, and usually I get valet parking so she can walk right in the building. (It’s a hospital in Miami that the workers at the other branches call the “big house”) Big place. She’s been feeling really good so I parked the car and we walked through the parking lot, all the way through the building to get to her doctor and then back out. Then we stopped at the grocery store and she walked all through the grocery store. Later in the day I took her with me to the vet to get the puppy her shots. She walked all over there. Then we came home and I made a pot of chili and we had dinner. After dinner I told her I was going to take the dogs for a walk. She decides to come with me. We get about 5 houses down and she says to me…..”good thing I came because I just sat around all day today.” I said “Mom, you ran all over today…..to the doctor… to the vet….to the store.” She says “that was TODAY?” I said “ahhhhhh yah, it was.” She stops dead in her tracks and says “I’m going back home, I’m really tired.”

Justices Divided Over Lethal Injections

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court appeared divided Monday over whether the drugs commonly injected to execute prisoners risk causing excruciating pain in violation of the Constitution.

Several justices indicated a willingness to preserve the three-drug cocktail that is authorized by three dozen states that allow executions. Such a decision would allow lethal injections, on hold since late September, to resume quickly.

Recent executions in Florida and Ohio took much longer than usual, with strong indications that the prisoners suffered severe pain in the process. Workers had trouble inserting the IV lines that are used to deliver the drugs.

Scalia, Roberts and Alito have no problem lavishing last-minute pain onto prisoners. Big surprise! Republicans are the pro-torture party, after all. An even bigger surprise… the Bush administration agrees!

Various news agencies this morning have reported that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards naval forces apparently tried to provoke a trio of US Navy warships in the Straits of Hormuz. We’ll cite the BBC’s report (the italicized bits are my emphasis):

Iran boats ‘threatened US ships’

Five Iranian speedboats harassed three US navy ships at the weekend, approaching them and radioing a threat to blow them up, US officials say.
The incident happened as the US vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz, which separates the Arabian peninsula and Iran, Pentagon officials said.
US sailors came close to opening fire, unnamed officials told CNN.
The White House on Monday warned Iran against “provocative actions that could lead to a dangerous incident”.
The speedboats came within about 200m of the US vessels, a Pentagon official told the French news agency AFP.
“I am coming at you. You will explode in a couple of minutes,” the Iranians said in a radio transmission, according to the officials.
The Iranian craft turned away “literally at the very moment that US forces were preparing to open fire”, the Associated Press reported, also citing an unnamed Pentagon official.

Since it is politically expedient to be a CHRISTIAN when seeking major public office in the United States, Barack Hussein Obama has joined the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim background.
