RIP: William F. Buckley Jr.

      Buck     February 27th, 2008 - 11:53 am

William F. Buckley Jr., who marshaled polysyllabic exuberance, famously arched eyebrows and a refined, perspicacious mind to elevate conservatism to the center of American political discourse, died Wednesday at his home in Stamford, Conn.

Buckley

Once, during a CBS News interview, Buckley remarked: President Bush suffers from “the absence of effective conservative ideology,” and that on foreign policy “There will be no legacy for Mr. Bush….his legacy is indecipherable.”

Last Night’s Debate

      QuestionGirl     February 27th, 2008 - 9:41 am

I thought Obama delivered some good zingers at last night’s debate……..

In regard to special interests:

The second thing we’re going to have to do is we’re actually going to have to go after the special interests. Senator Clinton, in one of these speeches — it may have been the same speech where you showed the clip — said, you can’t just wave a magic wand and expect special interests to go away.
That is absolutely true, but it doesn’t help if you’re taking millions of dollars of contributions from those special interests.

In regard to Clinton’s Iraq war vote:

My objections to the war in Iraq were not simply a speech. I was in the midst of a U.S. Senate campaign. It was a high’stakes campaign. I was one of the most vocal opponents of the war, and I was very specific as to why.
And so when I bring this up, it is not simply to say, “I told you so,” but to give you an insight in terms of how I would make decisions.
And the fact was this was a big strategic blunder. It was not a matter of, “Well, here is the initial decision, but since then we’ve voted the same way.”
Once we had driven the bus into the ditch, there were only so many ways we could get out. The question is: Who’s making the decision initially to drive the bus into the ditch?
And the fact is that Senator Clinton often says that she is ready on day one, but, in fact, she was ready to give in to George Bush on day one on this critical issue. So the same person that she criticizes for having terrible judgment and we can’t afford to have another one of those — in fact, she facilitated and enabled this individual to make a decision that has been strategically damaging to the United States of America.

Ore. Mayor Poses in Underwear, Loses Job

ARLINGTON, Ore. (AP) — The mayor of an Oregon town who once stripped to her underwear and posed on a fire truck has been stripped of her office.

Voters in this town of about 500 voted narrowly Monday to recall Carmen Kontur-Gronquist. The tally was 142-139. City officials said the recall is effective Tuesday. [...]

Opponents said it wasn’t fitting for the mayor to be so depicted. They said they also disagreed with her on issues about water and the local golf course.

Adding To Bush’s Legacy

      Buck     February 27th, 2008 - 9:09 am

I guess it really isn’t fair to attach this solely to the Bush administration. You’d have to also consider general republican ideology, a spineless democratic majority and a citizenry peppered with idiocy.

Oil Hits Record $102 As Dollar Tumbles

SINGAPORE (AP) — Oil prices broke through a new intraday high of $102 a barrel Wednesday as a slide in the U.S. dollar prompted investors to pump more money into energy futures as a hedge against inflation.

The dollar sank to a record low against the euro after the release of three disheartening U.S. economic reports Tuesday that show that the economy is slowing as prices for consumer goods rise. The dollar’s decline prompted investors to seek a safe haven from turmoil in the financial markets and the threat of inflation. [...]

“The U.S. dollar weakened against the euro and the economic data also indicated that inflation in the U.S. rose in January, and commodities are generally considered a hedge against inflation,” Shum said. “We are therefore seeing these strong prices that have really little to do with oil market fundamentals.”
