Fool’s Day 2008

Arlecchino650.jpg

Happy Fool’s Day! It’s a good day to read or watch a comedy, or better still, a satire. We’re always in need of Shakespearean fools who speak truth to power, especially given the idiots and knaves we have in high places. At the very least, please take a moment today to mock our preznit. Really, it’s your duty as an American.

No Consequence

Why do we even bother paying taxes? With the spineless representation this Congress offers, we could certainly get away with it! I am tired of being a model citizen, paying my taxes on time, having elitists riding rough’shod all over me and a milquetoast government overseeing NOTHING!

Congress Presses Oil Execs on High Prices

Facing members of Congress unhappy about the soaring price of petroleum, executives from five giant oil companies today sought to portray themselves as part of the energy solution and not the energy problem. [...]

“I believe the laws of supply and demand when it comes to oil and gas are broken and completely malfunctioning,” said Rep. John B. Larson (D-Conn.). [...]

[Rep. Edward J.] Markey [D-Mass.] defended the House energy tax package that is still awaiting action in the Senate. “You can’t have it both ways Mr. Simon,” Markey said. “You can’t be nickel-and-diming renewables at Exxon Mobil and simultaneously fighting our efforts to move over the resources to renewables to help this country break its dependence on foreign oil.” [...]

“We’re working darn hard. We have a challenge to meet,” said Peter J. Robertson, vice chairman of Chevron Corp. “So life is not easy.”

Rep. Cleaver cited the companies’ high share prices on the stock market and said it didn’t sound like much of a struggle.

Bush Cronyism, With Tentacles

The man is a friend to Bush, and the FBI wonders if he steered business to friends?

So twisted. They’re wondering this, and here Bush gave the HUD position to his “longtime friend and former neighbor.”

Would be friggin’ laughable if not for being so damn pathetic and sad:

Jackson Resigns as HUD Secretary

Embattled Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson announced his resignation yesterday, leaving the Bush administration without a top housing official in the midst of a vast mortgage crisis that has shaken the global economy.

Jackson, a longtime friend and former neighbor of President Bush, departed after the White House concluded he had too many controversies swirling around him to be an effective Cabinet member, several HUD officials said privately.

Jackson has been accused of favoritism involving HUD contractors for two years, and the FBI and the Justice Department are investigating whether he steered business to friends.

Incompetence, Ineptitude And Greed

This is bullshit. Out government and everything that touches it sucks! We, as everyday citizens, must follow rules. If we break the rules, we are punished. Why doesn’t our government operate this way? It used to!.. sorta.

If contractors can’t stay on budget or time-table, then fire their asses and replace them… simple as that!

GAO Blasts Weapons Budget

Government auditors issued a scathing review yesterday of dozens of the Pentagon’s biggest weapons systems, saying ships, aircraft and satellites are billions of dollars over budget and years behind schedule.

The Government Accountability Office found that 95 major systems have exceeded their original budgets by a total of $295 billion, bringing their total cost to $1.6 trillion, and are delivered almost two years late on average. In addition, none of the systems that the GAO looked at had met all of the standards for best management practices during their development stages.

Auditors said the Defense Department showed few signs of improvement since the GAO began issuing its annual assessments of selected weapons systems six years ago. “It’s not getting any better by any means,” said Michael Sullivan, director of the GAO’s acquisition and sourcing team. “It’s taking longer and costing more.”

A Public Service Message From AT&T

Citing poor phone quality due to buildup of line dust, AT&T plans much needed maintenance today.

Customers are warned to wrap their (land-line) phones in plastic so as to avoid a possible dust mess as the lines are being blown out.
