Dark Day For Justice - II

Instead of appending/updating an older post, I opted to give the following it’s own deserving spot.

Washington Monthly commenter, Sparko, has a few things to say about the recent Supreme Court photo ID decision:

I call into question every previous election before the invention of photography then. I say we make the supreme court an elected office. They answer not to the people. They are nothing better than a clique of despots and idiots. They have no sense of justice and have become political appointees–nothing more. The most important Constitutional reform, after the abortion that was Bush V. Gore, is a complete overhaul of the Supreme Court. It took one moronic court to undermine our whole government. When they became political, they ended the republic.

We really have much freedom left for a fascist country. In due course, I would expect that one will only be able to vote with an approved party ID. I grew up thinking conservatives hated this type of government intervention; that they believed in the freedom of the individual; that they believed in less government and trusted in the people. I was so wrong. Just because George Will speaks lovingly about baseball doesn’t mean he won’t fire a fastball at your head an steal your wallet. We have now, clearly, the worst performance of all three branches of government in American history. When the corporations set up the shell of a propaganda media, they created a shield under which America was overtaken by cancer. Many problems are eroding our very existence as a nation. But Hillary can take another blue-collar shot of Crown Royal, and all is forgotten. What a nightmare since December 2000.

Could not have said it better myself!

Elizabeth Edwards: What Did We Learn?

But I am saying that every analysis that is shortened, every corner that is cut, moves us further away from the truth until what is left is the Cliffs Notes of the news, or what I call strobe-light journalism, in which the outlines are accurate enough but we cannot really see the whole picture.

-Elizabeth Edwards, The New York Times

Regarding all the media attention given Pennsylvania and the Democratic primary, Elizabeth Edwards asks, “what did we learn?

Truth is, very little of substance. For example, you probably don’t know the first thing about Joe Biden’s health care plan, but you’re probably well aware of Obama’s bowling score.

As Mrs. Edwards states, “We are choosing a president, the next leader of the free world. We are not buying soap, and we are not choosing a court clerk with primarily administrative duties.”

In Vain

Yes, in vain. The wealthy are in charge and the wealthy do not give a damn if you or I go hungry.

They have half of us voting one way and the other half voting the other. You want change? Stop voting against your own self-interests!

Truckers rally in Washington, seeking lower gas prices

BlueHerald ImageWASHINGTON (AP) — Horns blaring in a deafening fanfare, a convoy of truck drivers traveled to Washington on Monday to protest record fuel prices.

Members of Truckers and Citizens United circled the National Mall before parking their rigs at RFK Stadium. From there, about 100 protesters marched and took shuttles to the Capitol, where an afternoon rally was held.

“The high price for oil is hurting our economy,” organizer Mark Kirsch said. “It’s hurting middle class people.”

Dark Day For Justice

People are worried that a McCain presidency will move the SCOTUS too far to the right. I think it’s already there.

Supreme Court says states can demand photo ID for voting. From the lead opinion:

It remains true, however, that flagrant examples of such fraud in other parts of the country have been documented throughout this Nation’s history by respected historians and journalists, that occasional examples have surfaced in recent years, and that Indiana’s own experience with fraudulent voting in the 2003 Democratic primary for East Chicago Mayor - though perpetrated using absentee ballots and not in-person fraud - demonstrate that not only is the risk of voter fraud real but that it could affect the outcome of a close election.

-Supreme Court Justice, John Paul Stevens

What Justice Stevens is saying here is that the only two cases of fraud mentioned during the course of the hearing had nothing to do with “in-person” voting.

From Balloon-Juice commenter, Davis X. Machina:

What happened to strict scrutiny?

Is there a compelling state interest?
Is the measure narrowly tailored to address only the harm?
Is this the least restrictive means to address the harm?

It was my understanding that if you don-t clear hurdle #1, you don-t even get to propose the measure.

There is absolutely NO REASON for the Supreme Court to rule the way it did except:

We all know why this is: it’s because, as Common Cause reminds us, restricting in-person voting tends to reduce turnout among minorities, the elderly, voters with disabilities, the poor, and the young - all of which, though CC is too polite to mention it, tend to vote Democratic. Absentee voters, by contrast, tend to vote Republican.

Pray It Away

Who says religion and oil don’t mix?

Choir director brings prayers for lower gas prices to SF

SAN FRANCISCO - A choir director who hopes prayer can bring down high gas prices is trying out his approach at some of the costliest pumps in the country.

Rocky Twyman of Washington, D.C., came to San Francisco over the weekend to stage a pray-in at a Chevron station. He is also calling on churchgoers to ask for God’s intervention where he says politicians have failed. [...]

The 59-year-old Twyman says people praying for cheaper fuel should also walk more and use car pools.

“He is also calling on churchgoers to ask for God’s intervention where he says politicians have failed.”

Politicians fail when they bow down to those who ask for God’s intervention.

McCain: So In Touch

I noticed again today that Sen. Obama repeated his opposition to giving low-income Americans a tax break, a little bit of relief so they can travel a little further and a little longer, and maybe have a little bit of money left over to enjoy some other things in their lives. Obviously Sen. Obama does not understand that this would be a nice thing for Americans, and the special interests should not be dictating this policy.

-John McCain

McCain is referring to his plan to suspend the tax on fuel, and Obama’s opposition to it. I just find it humorous that a multi-millionaire would genuinely be worried about poor people being able to travel “a little further” and have “a little bit of money left over.”

It really is laughable.

Hog-Tying That Slowdown… Yee Hah!

Bush is being kinda vague here. When does this “slowdown” disappear? Is it at the moment we receive our checks? Is it after we purchase a fill up at the pumps? Or maybe it’s at the exact moment our checks go into the hands of big oil? That’s the one I’m betting on. So I’m doing the smart thing and just sending my rebate directly to Exxon:

Join me, and prezdent Bush, in hog-tying this “slowdown” into oblivion.

Tax rebates start going out today, earlier than planned

WASHINGTON (AP) — Tax rebates will start going out today, earlier than previously announced. President Bush announced the change in schedule on Friday.

“Starting Monday, the effects of the stimulus will begin to reach millions of households across our country,” Bush said Friday in remarks on the South Lawn of the White House. [...]

“The money is going to help Americans offset the high prices we’re seeing at the gas pump, the grocery store, and also give our economy a boost to help us pull out of this economic slowdown,” Bush said.
