When I came home from Viet-Nam I had 10 months left on enlistment so the Army in its infinite wisdom decided that I would be a good MP/stockade guard/ prisoner chaser. I was required to carry a loaded .45. After duty I was supposed to turn in my weapon and ammo at arms room. Outside the door was a barrel filled with sand that we were supposed to clear our weapons in. We were supposed to remove the clip, jack the slide cocking the weapon point it into the barrel and pull the trigger. One day I was preoccupied while standing in line and I forgot yo remove the clip. I jacked the slide pointed it into the barrel and when I pulled the trigger the weapon discharged. I felt like the idiot that I was for allowing my concentration to slip while holding a loaded weapon. Accidents do happen. That is why they are called accidents. I was very lucky that there were no other repurcussions than my embarrassment.
