Ingrid Betancourt, Colombia’s highest profile hostage, was freed tonight along with three US military contractors in an “audacious” raid that dealt the biggest blow yet to the country’s Marxist rebel movement.

The Colombian Army announced the surprise release of the former presidential candidate, who has become an international symbol of Colombia’s hostage crisis during her six years in captivity. The US will welcome the news that the three Americans have also been freed. The US Defence Department employees — Thomas Howes, Marc Gonsalves and Keith Stansell — were seized when their aircraft crashed while on a drug eradication mission in 2003.
