A Never-ending Punishment
by Buck • Thursday, March 19th, 2009 - 12:34 pmI was always told Hell is where you went for never-ending punishment.
These people certainly have a right to be nervous and upset. Being overly protective of our young is only natural. But, at the same time, those who have served their time deserve to get on with their lives too.
I don’t know why people do what they do. And I don’t know why, even after serving time, some of these people will go on to recommit these same crimes again. But death threats are uncalled for too. It’s a common knee-jerk reaction which, if not controlled, can lead to really stupid shit happening, like the bombing of abortion clinics. Killing countless people just to save one “life”(?)… how smart is that? But what can you expect when most adults choose to act like children?
This is one of those topics that continues to be shelved instead of addressed straight forward. And for that reason, those convicted of such crimes will continue paying dearly and, undoubtedly, for the rest of their lives.

Catholic effort to house paroled pariahs met with outrage, death threats
LEXINGTON, Ky. – A Catholic charity in Kentucky faced an uproar over its efforts to buy a home for four registered sex offenders, continuing what supporters say is a never-ending cycle for low-income offenders trying to get their lives back on track.
Members of the Catholic Action Center said they expected to hear fears and objections from the community when they held a forum at a Baptist church in January on their carefully planned purchase. They didn’t expect to hear death threats. [...]
The charity was well within the law: The property was more than 1,000 feet from a school or daycare, and police were notified days in advance. Officials even scheduled a courtesy meeting to assure neighbors that the men had to follow strict rules — drug testing, counseling and a 6 p.m. curfew. That meeting is where the plan fell apart, as neighbors voted unanimously against it. [...]
[convicted rapist, Terry] Gaunce said it seems sex offenders never get to live down their offenses while other criminals can.

It sounds like they put in plenty of precautions. And what about ankle bracelets and the like?
IIRC, recidivism for ex-prisoners used to be roughly 20%, although I don't know off-hand how that breaks down for sex offenders. The added problem with pedophiles specifically is that they're wired that way – and barring certain prescription drugs that might perhaps help, the key issues are going to be their own impulse control and strict external safeguards. If someone's actually innocent, this sort of situation is horrible.
