ROME (AP) — A pilot who began praying instead of enacting emergency measures before a Tunisian charter flight plummeted into the sea and killed 16 people off Sicily in 2005 was convicted of manslaughter, news reports said Tuesday.
The plane’s black box showed that the Tunisian pilot, Chefik Gharbi, lost control of the situation, ceded command of the plane to his co-pilot and began praying, the ANSA news agency reported.
Gharbi and his co-pilot, who was also convicted in the case, were among 23 people who survived the crash. Both were sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Prosecutors contended that the pair had failed to put emergency measures in place.

Reminds me of a story I read when I was young, about a man who refused to leave his home when the rains came and the water started to rise. When friends came by to pick him up, he refused, saying that God would save him.
As the waters continued to rise, a rescue boat came by to pick him up, but he still refused, saying only that God would save him.
The waters continued to rise. Rising so high he had to climb to his roof or perish. While on his roof, a helicopter spotted him and swung down to pick him up, and he still refused, saying that God would save him.
Then, he drowned.
When he got to Heaven, he asked God why He didn’t save him. God answered, "I sent you friends, a boat, and a helicopter. What more did you want?"
Sometimes God's work isn't so mysterious.
