Last Survivor of Titanic Dies

by QuestionGirl • Sunday, May 31st, 2009 - 6:14 pm

RIP Ms. Dean

Millvina Dean, who as a baby was wrapped in a sack and lowered into a lifeboat in the frigid North Atlantic, died Sunday, having been the last survivor of 1912 sinking of the RMS Titanic.

She was 97 years old, and she died where she had lived — in Southampton, England, the city her family had tried to leave behind when it took the ship’s ill-fated maiden voyage, bound for America.

She died in her sleep early Sunday, her friend Gunter Babler told the Associated Press. It was the 98th anniversary of the launch of the ship that was billed as “practically unsinkable.”

Abortion Doctor Killed

by QuestionGirl • Sunday, May 31st, 2009 - 3:29 pm

Some religious whacko doesn’t believe in abortions, but thinks it’s ok to kill someone who does. I’m not a supporter of late term abortions other than if the mother’s health is at risk, but I wouldn’t kill anyone who performed them. And the people religious whackos will cheer this death. Sick twisted thinking.

Dr. George Tiller, whose Wichita, Kansas, women’s clinic has been the target of anti-abortion protests for years, was shot and killed at his church Sunday morning, his attorneys said.
Dr. George Tiller was one of the few U.S. physicians that performed late-term abortions.

Laura Shaneyfelt, an attorney with the firm of Monnat and Spurrier, confirmed Tiller’s death to CNN.

The 67-year-old doctor was one of the few U.S. physicians who still performed late-term abortions. He survived a 1993 shooting outside his clinic.

Wichita police said they were searching for a powder-blue Ford Taurus in connection with the killing, which took place outside Reformation Lutheran Church shortly after 10 a.m.

Police spokesman Gordon Bassham said witnesses provided a license number of the car the killer used to speed away from the church.

Why the Pentagon Is Probably Lying About its Supressed Sodomy and Rape Photos

by QuestionGirl • Sunday, May 31st, 2009 - 1:45 pm

Naomi Wolf reports at Alternet:

The Telegraph of London broke the news — because the U.S. press is in a drugged stupor – — that the photos President Barack Obama is refusing to release of detainee abuse depict, among other sexual tortures, an American soldier raping a female detainee and a male translator raping a male prisoner.

The paper claims the photos also show anal rape of prisoners with foreign objects such as wires and lightsticks. Retired Army Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba calls the images “horrific” and “indecent” (but absurdly agrees that Obama should not release them — proving once again that the definition of hypocrisy is the assertion that the truth is in poor taste).

Predictably, a few hours later, the Pentagon issues a formal denial.

It is very likely that the Pentagon lying. This is probably exactly what the photos show, because it happened. Precisely these exact sex crimes — these exact images and these very objects – — are familiar and well-documented to those of us who follow closely rights organizations reports of what has already been confirmed.

As I wrote last year in my piece on sex crimes against detainees, “Sex Crimes in the White House,” highly perverse, systematic sexual torture and sexual humiliation was, original documents reveal, directed from the top:

President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice were present in meetings where sexual humiliation was discussed as policy.
The Defense Authorization Act of 2007 was written specifically to allow certain kinds of sexual abuse, such as forced nakedness, which is illegal and understood by domestic and international law to be a form of sexual assault.
Rumsfeld is in print and on the record consulting with subordinates about the policy and practice of sexual humiliation, in a collection of documents obtained by the ACLU by a Freedom of Information Act filing compiled in Jameel Jaffer’s important book The Torture Administration.

The image of the female prisoner, probably Iraqi, being sexually assaulted? That image, or a similar one, has been widely seen in the Muslim world. Reports of the rape scenes described have also appeared in rights organizations summaries since 2004.

Typical GOP: Lots Of Smoke And No Fire

by Buck • Sunday, May 31st, 2009 - 8:52 am

If the RNC had compared Obamas evening out with that of George W. Bush’s record-breaking vacation flights back and forth to his Texas ranch or Camp David, republicans would have very little to be up in arms over. That is, if you factor out GOP hypocrisy.

RNC slams Obama Broadway date night

WASHINGTON, May 30 (UPI) — GOP officials chided U.S. President Barack Obama for attending a Broadway play Saturday but the White House said Obama was keeping a campaign promise. [...]

In a posting on its Web site, the Republican National Committee contrasted the Obamas evening out with General Motors Corp.’s fight for survival and the broader economic turndown.

“As President Obama prepares to wing into Manhattan’s theater district on Air Force One to take in a Broadway show, GM is preparing to file bankruptcy and families across America continue to struggle to pay their bills,” the GOP said. “Have a great Saturday evening — even if you’re not jetting off somewhere at taxpayer expense.”

RNC spokeswoman Gail Gitcho said if Obama wanted to go to the theater, “isn’t the Presidential box at the Kennedy Center good enough?,” Politico reported.

376.59 MPG Car Found In Museum (It Was Built In 1959)

Think you need a hybrid to get great mileage? Try a souped-down 1959 Opel T-1.

In another tribute to high-mileage car hacks, a man named Evan McMullen rediscovered a 1975 Guiness-World Record-Setting car that got 376.59 MPG.

It was wasting away in a museum in Florida:

That number doesn’t come from some manta ray-shaped, wind tunnel-vetted carbon fiber space car. No, it’s from a chop-top, steel-frame 1959 Opel T-1 (think melting jelly bean, but uglier). And the record was set in 1973 in a contest sponsored by Shell Oil Co.

Unfortunately, that contest-winning mileage number occurred on a closed track at a steady 30 mph. Not exactly highway speeds. Nonetheless, it makes you wonder about the evolution of automobile manufacturing in the last 50 years…

Weekly Address: President Obama on Judge Sotomayors Experience

by Buck • Saturday, May 30th, 2009 - 11:34 am
And this is what makes Judge Sotomayor so extraordinary. Even as she has reached the heights of her profession, she has never forgotten where she began. She has faced down barriers, overcome difficult odds, and lived the American dream. As a Justice of the Supreme Court, she will bring not only the experience acquired over the course of a brilliant legal career, but the wisdom accumulated over the course of an extraordinary journey – a journey defined by hard work, fierce intelligence, and the enduring faith that, in America, all things are possible.

Publicized Threat Of Assassination

by Buck • Saturday, May 30th, 2009 - 11:29 am

They should put this lowlife in front of a live camera and beat him with a stick until he stops breathing.

It’s a damn shame that you can’t snap your fingers and make a stupid person smart. But, with a little help with a 2X4, you most certainly can get them to shut the hell up.

Check it out:

The Warren Times-Observer, based in Warren, Pennsylvania, ran an ad on Thursday which implicitly threatened the president by wishing that he “follow in the footsteps of Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy,” all of whom are former Presidents of the United States who were assassinated.

“The ad representative didn’t make the connection among the four other presidents mentioned and mistakenly allowed the ad to run,” the paper explained on Friday.
