senator inhofe: Crazed lunatic or just plain nuts?
by D-day • 2:21 pm

This is a small snippet of the Senator’s speech to the 2006 Voter Values Summit. If you have the stomach for it, you can read more here. (this is a great site btw)

And so - get the scene now - back, that was, the ilk, the, the idea of this is that the, the, the climate is changing, it’s going up, and it’s due not to actual causes but due to the release of CO2 and what they call anthropogenic gasses. Man made gasses. The motive of this is to try to shut down this machine called America, stop building, stop - y’know - driving around and all these things and so - ah, anyway - we were just about to sign the Kyoto treaty when I became chairman of the committee that Gil talked about in his introduction, its called Environment and Public Works. Now, in this committee we have jurisdiction over this, uh, all these areas, so I thought “we need find out what the truth is about the Global Warming.

So the question above about Senator Inhofe above is a rhetorical one. He is a crazed lunatic to say the least.

Amnesty for “the dirty war”
by D-day • 1:04 pm

The United States is following the lead of “dirty war” nations, such as Argentina and Chile, in enacting what amounts to an amnesty law protecting U.S. government operatives, apparently up to and including President George W. Bush, who have committed or are responsible for human rights crimes.

Article here.

This president and his administration have known all along that their love of and practise of torture has always been both immoral and illegal. Why else would they be so desperate to get this legislation passed before the coming elections? The answer is simple, not only are they murderous war criminals, they are premeditated murderous war criminals and they are desperate now to cover their sorry asses.

Too harsh?

Okay. After a weekend of Jack Daniels, leather Jackets and other debauchery, it’s time for us fellas to slither home and make it up to the womenfolk. What better way to do that than by shamelessly sucking up to them! This one’s for you ladies….

Man Smart, Woman Smarter

I became a deadhead in college. Followed them around and fried my brain. If I could, I’d do it all over again.

How our govenment really works
by D-day • 6:07 pm

I think this is indicative of how our government really operates. If you don’t like the results of a study, throw it out! Perhaps this is why they keep “studying” global warming. They are waiting for one that claims everything is peachy keen and throwing out all the others.

WASHINGTON - The Federal Communications Commission ordered its staff to destroy all copies of a draft study that suggested greater concentration of media ownership would hurt local TV news coverage, a former lawyer at the agency says.

lie lie lie dick cheney lie lie lie
by D-day • 5:05 pm

Redundant title huh?

Over the weekend, our lying liar of a Vice President lied about not having seen the Senate Intelligence Committee report debunking the lying claim that Iraq had any dealings with Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The problem is, he would have had to have seen it…

This morning on Meet the Press, Cheney repeatedly cited Zarqawi as the link between pre-war Iraq and al-Qaeda. When Tim Russert mentioned the Senate Intelligence Committee report, Cheney said he “hadn’t seen it.”

Common sense would lead us to believe that he is lying for several reasons:

1. While the Senate Intelligence Committee report was released publicly on Friday, it has been available to people with the appropriate security clearance for a year.

2. As President of the Senate, all findings by Senate Committees are given to his staff.

3. Even if he doesn’t read every report, it is not plausible that he would not have read this one, since it deals with the biggest issue in politics; the war in Iraq, foreign policy and intelligence.

They won’t stop lying until you stop believing.

Judging Judges and those that judge them
by D-day • 12:09 pm

98.jpg

Conservatives like to divide judges into liberal “activists” and conservative nonactivists who interpret the law rather than making it. Anyone who follows the courts knows that conservative judges are as activist as liberal judges -just for different causes. A new study of Supreme Court voting patterns confirms this and suggests that the conservative Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas are actually more activist than their liberal colleagues.

(the editorial can be found by going here and clicking the NYT editorial link.)

Is anyone surprised by this? Which ideology is it that is out to change the world to fit it’s narrow vision of it? Conservative or Liberal?

I Love this site. (Homepage here)

This article here is about the 14 points of fascism and the Bush administration. It is an excellent recap of the Bushco crimes and other acts of fascism.

Even the Military Thinks Bush is Going Too Far
by D-day • 12:01 am

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon’s top uniformed lawyers took issue Thursday with a key part of a White House plan to prosecute terrorism detainees, telling Congress that limiting the suspects- access to evidence could violate treaty obligations.

It must suck to be in charge of a military that doesn’t share your sense of fascism.

American Exceptionalism and Iraq
by D-day • 1:08 pm

Alexis de Tocqueville (bio here) first coined the phrase back in the 1830s. It is to describe the idea that the United States has a special and unique place in the world that separates us from other nations. Scholars and historians have debated the definitions of what it means over the years (links here and here ) but if you think of such things as Manifest Destiny, American Imperialism or American interventionism, you get the idea of what it has brought about. On the political left, it means egalitarianism. On the right, it means moral superiority.

It is, in part, the asertion that the U.S. is born from God’s will and is a symbol of hope for all the world. A concept that in essence began with the Puritans.

As author Seymour Martin Lipset wrote in his aptly named book Double Edged Sword, (info here, an excerpt here) it makes the U.S. the greatest nation on Earth as well as the worst. The case can certainly be made for both, depending on your point of view, but there are times when it brings out the worst in both the left and right. A good example is why we are involved in Iraq.

Putting aside all the factual distortions and outright lies that led to the invasion, how is it that Americans were so accepting of the idea of the invasion in the first place? The answer may lie in American Exceptionalism, our nation’s inherent belief that we are a force for good in the world. People in this country feel that it is our right as a nation to impose our will on other nations because after all, deep down everyone wishes they were more like us and our motives are pure.

Hubris? Arrogance? That’s how much of the rest of the world sees it.

If we except the notion that the U.S. is a force for good in the world, then it can easily be seen how the Bush administration so easily sold the people of this country on the invasion. We are doing the Iraqi people a favor by bringing them democracy and freedom. We got rid of an evil tyrant, etc. Those are some of the talking points from the right but some on the left are part of the problem too. They are the ones who believe that since we have broken it, it is our duty to stay and fix it.

That of course raises the question: Can it be fixed? Herein lies the crux of the problem today. It is our national arrogance that believes eventually it can. A belief embodied by a president who thinks he is doing God’s will.

It brings to mind the Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme:

All of King George’s horses and all of King George’s men can’t put Iraq back together again.
