Trotta: Take Obama Out

      QuestionGirl     May 26th, 2008 - 10:15 am

Well isn’t this just so special……. I wonder what would happen if I went on television and said there must be a bullet somewhere with Bush’s name on it.   Somehow I’m thinking I’d be in Gitmo.

From Juan Cole:

Liz Trotta, a veteran journalist who helped pioneer a place for women at the front as war correspondents, was being interviewed on Fox News on Sunday by Eric Shawn, when she commented on Hillary’s Clinton’s reference to RFK’s assassination:

‘ “And now we have what some are reading as a suggestion that somebody knock off Osama, uh Obama. Well, both, if we could.” She laughed. ‘

Here’s the video:

She laughed.

And Mr. Shawn did not stop her, did not say “Surely you do not mean that,” and just went on with the interview:

‘ “But do you really think that-’she didn’t mean that she thinks that he going to get assassinated, and she apologized–

Trotta: “Well, that’s beside the point, whether she meant it or not.”

Shawn: “And she’s just using it in a historical context?”

Trotta: “She’s tone deaf, because it’s a radioactive word. And the whole question of the first black man becoming a candidate for presidency of the United States has all kinds of overtones and all kinds of caveats that really have to be considered in this thing. And his security has been a real issue. He’s had bodyguards earlier than anybody else. Surely this woman had to know that that was a third rail to say ‘assassination.’ And it’s hard to argue for her on this, because it isn’t the first time she’s made this step.” ‘

And Trotta thinks that Hillary Clinton is tone deaf!

Trotta appeared to have no remorse whatsoever for what she had said.

Is this what Rupert Murdoch’s petty, spiteful, poisonous media have brought us to in this country, jokes about killing our presidential candidates and pairing their names with those of mass murderers? Under the rules of the Federal Communications Commission as they existed before the Supreme Court gutted the Fairness Doctrine in 1987, Fox would have been hugely fined or closed as a thinly disguised Republican Party House organ. (As for the argument that there are lots of news points of view to choose from now, I’m still waiting for the Socialist Party to have its cable station available in almost all US markets.)

Some are petitioning for Trotta to be banned from Fox, but it seems to me what is actually appropriate is an apology, from Rupert Murdoch himself, for all the false and vicious things he has purveyed to the American people through his phony bought and paid for “journalism.” And if he won’t apologize and reform, maybe it is time for a consumer boycott of Fox’s major advertisers. In our corrupt corporate media system, Shawn’s interview of Lotta was actually rented out to advertisers; so who paid for that piece of excrement to be on the air? Should we be buying that product?

If we analyze Trotta’s brief, murderous faux pas, the language issues come to the fore.

Americans need to be told that Usamah Bin Laden does not own the name Usamah, and there are lots of wonderful people named Usamah. It is just a classical Arabic word for “lion.” It is given by Christian as well as Muslim families, and some of the physicians who heal us of serious maladies are named Usamah. Moreover, there is no “o” in Arabic. It is not Osama but Usamah. It does not rhyme with Obama and is not related in any way to it. Obama is an African (presumably Dholua or other West Nilotic) word, not a Semitic one.

Then can we ban this euphemism, “take out”? In its tertiary sense, according to Merriam Webster,, it means to “eliminate, kill, destroy.” If that is what it means, then say it, damn it.

Bush used to always talk about “taking out” Saddam. Well, we now know that what he meant was “to have him lynched by the fanatical Shiite Mahdi Army.” A euphemism like “take out” seems less innocuous, perhaps, than just “kill.” But killing should not be made to seem innocuous. People should say what they mean. If you want to kill someone, be brave enough to admit it.

Journalists Shawn and Trotta have just brought the US presidential campaign to a new low of innuendo, viciousness, cavalier disregard for the sanctity of life, and peculiar lack of self-reflection. But in most ways, they are just continuing the Fox and Murdoch house traditions.

Tone deaf, indeed.

No Lack of Assholes in England

      QuestionGirl     November 23rd, 2007 - 11:17 am

Unbelievable…….or not. There’s assholes all over the world……..

From the Daily Mail:

Injured soldiers who lost limbs in Iraq and Afghanistan have been jeered out of a public swimming pool.

Two women complained that the soldiers would scare children and that they should not be given precedence over paying customers.

The unpleasant scenes broke out at Leatherhead Leisure Centre in Surrey as the servicemen, from Headley Court Military Hospital, were starting a weekly swimming therapy session.

They have to use the 25-metre public pool because the hydro-pool at the defence rehabilitation centre is not big enough for swimming.

Newborn rescued from toilet

      Jim Swanson     August 29th, 2007 - 2:19 am

United Press International

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 29 (UPI) — A newborn boy rescued after his mother allegedly tried to flush him down a toilet at the fast-food restaurant where she worked was expected to survive.

The premature infant, born at about 32 weeks gestation, was listed in critical-but’stable condition Tuesday, The Kansas City Star reported.

The 20-year-old McDonald’s employee gave birth in the restaurant women’s room Monday afternoon, police said. Someone called an ambulance and when paramedics arrived she allegedly told them she had “flushed three times but it would not go down,” the newspaper said.

A paramedic then found the baby face down in the water with no pulse and not breathing. He and his partner revived the child.

Police said the mother told the ambulance crew she didn’t know she was pregnant or that she had given birth. But police said they had learned she previously told friends she was pregnant.

Woman gets 12 years for raping daughter

      Jim Swanson     June 23rd, 2007 - 7:07 am

from United Press International

EDINBURGH, Scotland, June 23 (UPI) — A Scottish woman has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a “grievous breach of trust” — participating in the sexual exploitation of her daughter.

Caroline Dunsmore of Edinburgh pleaded guilty to the rape of her daughter, admitting that she participated with her husband, William King. King has since died.

A friend of King, John O’Flaherty, also received a 12-year sentence, The Scotsman reported. Another man, Morris Petch, who allegedly organized the pedophile activities, faces a possible life sentence.

Dana Fowley, Dunsmore’s daughter, ran out of the courtroom during the Friday sentencing hearing. She has allowed her name to be used in news accounts of the case.

“It was a justified sentence,” she said. “My whole life has been hell. Going through a trial has been hell and today has been hell.”

Fowley was sexually abused from the age of 6 to 15, while the defendants molested at least one other girl. Dunsmore’s father, William Dunsmore, who received a 5-year sentence last year, was also involved.

Feingold Searching for Objecting Senator

      QuestionGirl     May 9th, 2007 - 12:46 pm

Talk about a coward. Doesn’t have the balls to stand up like a man, or woman, and take responsibility for this. Why not? If you felt compassioned enough to block it, then you should be able to admit it. I called Martinez’s office in Florida and was told they “don’t know” if he’s the Senator with the secret hold. What friggin chickenshits these Republicans are.

Dear Suzette,

A Republican Senator is trying to derail my campaign finance disclosure bill, and I need your help to figure out who it is.

My legislation, the Senate Campaign Disclosure Parity Act (S. 223), requires Senate campaigns to submit campaign finance reports electronically. Sounds simple enough doesn’t it? House campaigns, political parties, Presidential campaigns, and even 527’s already file their reports online - but that’s not the case in the Senate.

The Senate has exempted themselves from this requirement and is only required to file paper reports. The public’s ability to review these reports in a timely manner is substantially curtailed by these antiquated paper filings. Not only that, it costs taxpayers over $250,000 per year to have these reports scanned and made available online at a much later date.

When Senator Feinstein and I sought to pass this legislation by unanimous consent, an objection was voiced on the floor “on behalf of a Republican senator.” Senators are within their rights to object to a bill coming to the floor of the Senate, but the objecting senator has not been named, and no one has spoken to me about any objection they may have to this legislation.

The use of these so-called “secret holds” has rightly come under attack in recent years, and I need your help to try and determine who may be delaying this common sense reform measure.

If you are represented by a Republican senator, please contact them and ask if they’re holding up my Senate Campaign Disclosure Parity Act. You can get contact info for your senators here. If you live in a state with two Democratic senators, consider forwarding this email to your friends in states that aren’t so lucky.

If you learn of anything that may be useful in helping me identify the “Secret Hold Senator,” email me at russ@progressivepatriotsfund.com.

I have no intention of dropping this issue and I appreciate your help in keeping the pressure on to try and identify this anonymous objector.

Sincerely,

Russ Feingold
United States Senator
Honorary Chair, Progressive Patriots Fund

Waxman Slapping Down Toenail

Coulter Saga Continues

      Buck     March 4th, 2007 - 2:46 pm

“C-mon, it was a joke. I would never insult gays by suggesting that they are like John Edwards. That would be mean.” -Coulter

Where she (rarely) lacks in antipathy, she makes up for in witless banter.

From CNN.com:

Coulter under fire for anti-gay slur

Getty ImageWASHINGTON (CNN) — Prominent politicians from both parties and a gay-rights group on Saturday condemned right-wing commentator Ann Coulter for her reference Friday to Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards as a “faggot.”
[...]

Coulter made her comment in Washington during an address to the 34th annual meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference, during which she gave her opinions about the Democrats’ slate of presidential hopefuls.

“I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate, John Edwards, but it turns out that you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot,’ so I’m - so, kind of at an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards, so I think I’ll just conclude here and take your questions,” said Coulter, whose comment was followed by applause.

CNN has reached out to Coulter’s representative, and received no response.

But the New York Times reported that she responded, in an e-mail, “C’mon, it was a joke. I would never insult gays by suggesting that they are like John Edwards. That would be mean.”

Many from both sides of the aisle denounced Coulter’s remarks.

A spokesman for Sen. John McCain, a Republican presidential candidate, called Coulter’s comments to the conservative group “wildly inappropriate.”

In a written statement, Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Massachusetts, said, “Ann Coulter’s words of hate have no place in the public sphere much less our political discourse. Not only should she apologize but those who participated in the conference with her should denounce her shameful and divisive actions.”

“Ann Coulter’s use of this anti-gay slur is vile and unacceptable,” said Neil G. Giuliano, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, “and the applause from her audience is an important reminder that Coulter’s ugly brand of bigotry is at the root of the discriminatory policies being promoted at this gathering.”

In a written statement, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean called on Republicans to denounce her remarks. “There is no place in political discourse for this kind of hate-filled and bigoted comments,” he said.

And, to add insult to injury, more Coulter bat-guano:

During a question-and-answer session, Coulter referred back to the issue of gays by alluding to the bid for the Republican presidential nomination being made by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

“I do want to point out one thing that has been driving me crazy with the media — how they keep describing Mitt Romney’s position as being pro-gays, and that’s going to upset the right wingers,” she said. “Well, you know, screw you! I’m not anti-gay. We’re against gay marriage. I don’t want gays to be discriminated against.”

She added, “I don’t know why all gays aren’t Republican. I think we have the pro-gay positions, which is anti-crime and for tax cuts. Gays make a lot of money and they’re victims of crime. No, they are! They should be with us.”

A spokesman for Romney called Coulter’s use of the slur “offensive.”

I realize the woman(?) thrives on attention and that we only add fuel to the fire by talking about her. But since the GOP continues to insist on having her speak at their conferences, we must continue to hit home that her bigoted, hate-filled homophobic views apparently represent those of her fellow republicans.
