Fraidy Cats

Very similar parallels exist between Pakistan and the U.S.: both believe in democracy and both are being run by despots. But only Pakistan has the good sense and backbone to toss their despot out on his ear! America has fraidy cats.

Pakistan coalition to pursue Musharraf impeachment

(CNN) — In a move hailed as “good news for democracy,” the head of Pakistan’s ruling coalition announced Thursday that the coalition will pursue impeachment against President Pervez Musharraf.

“The coalition confirmed the resolve that democratic forces will work jointly to making a transition to genuine democracy,” the head of Pakistan People’s Party Asif Ali Zardari said, reading a joint communique with his coalition partners. [...]

“The army doesn’t want him to be eliminated, the Americans are still favoring him,” [Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmad -- an Islamabad-based political analyst] noted.

The People, The Press and the Case for Impeachment

impeach.jpg

“When our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence they were not worried about political will, how much time there was, or about any parties’ political future, they were just worried they were going to be hanged by the neck. But they did what was right. Now it is your time.”
Elliott Adams, President, Veterans for Peace, testimony July 25, 2008

Pelosi On Bush: God Bless Him, He’s A Total Failure

Hey, she got one right!

Pelosi calls Bush ‘a total failure’

President Bush has been a “total failure” in everything from the economy to the war to energy policy, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday. [...]

“You know, God bless him, bless his heart, president of the United States, a total failure, losing all credibility with the American people on the economy, on the war, on energy, you name the subject,” Pelosi replied. She then tsk-tsked Bush for “challenging Congress when we are trying to sweep up after his mess over and over and over again.”

Speaking of Pelosi… Impeachment is back on the table! Well, sort of. A little, maybe. Read John Cole’s post, “All Preordained“, to get a better understanding of what’s going on.

Articles of Impeachment

If you didn’t watch Dennis Kucinich the other night going through his articles of impeachment on the floor of the house……..do read them. We all know the Bush administration is full of criminals and liars, but it was stunning to hear Kucinich go through instance after instance of the corruption and stupidity. And it’s disgusting that Pelosi and Reid didn’t put impeachment on the table upon taking control. Big mistake. I’ve read that people think Kucinich was just showboating…..that this will not lead to impeachment. I think the man is a hero for trying to do the right thing, knowing that it won’t happen. History will be kind to Dennis Kucinich. They should make a movie out of his presentation. A true patriot.

Keeping Your Eye On The Ball

…in the history of our nation we have never encountered a moment where the actions of a President or Vice President have more strongly demanded the use of the power of impeachment.

-Florida Congressman Robert Wexler, on Bush and Cheney

John Nichols, of The Online Beat, has a great piece up over at The Nation, “Wexler: Election Can’t Distract From Holding Cheney to Account“. Good read!

Anti-War Activist Plan Protest at Rose Parade

Gee, you think it will be broadcast? I think…..NOT.

From Xinhua:

U.S. anti-war activists said Sunday they plan to protest on the sidelines of the Rose Parade in Pasadena on New Year’s day, calling for an end to the Iraq war and the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

A group call itself the White Rose Coalition said its members would demonstrate in front of the TV camera platforms from 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day, two hours before the famous annual holiday event begins.

Organizers plan to start demonstrating during pre-parade telecasts, according to Peter Thottam, the coalition’s spokesman.

“Everything we are doing is strictly within our First Amendment rights, and we do not want to interrupt anyone’s enjoyment of the parade,” he said. “We have made it clear to every participant that we want to be respectful.”

“We are a decentralized group simply trying to get our message out through the mainstream media blockade, especially about the impeachment of the president of the United States,” said Thottam, a lawyer and former political candidate for the Green Party.

The White Rose Coalition, which takes its name after a short-lived resistance movement to Nazi power in Munich in 1942, said on its website that activists will unfurl a banner and demonstrate as the Port of Los Angeles float passes by the grandstands on Colorado Boulevard at about 9 a.m.

According to Tottham, California peace activist Cindy Sheehan reportedly will also attend.

The spokesman said that protest organizers have been promised by police and Tournament of Roses officials that they will not be arrested if they do not hold up signs as to block other persons’ views.

About 1 million people from across the United States are expected to attend the 119th Annual Tournament of Roses Parade, which will be broadcast live by major U.S. television networks and watched by millions of people around the world.

If you haven’t signed the petition yet, please go and do so. Show some love for your country! It was reported that the server crashed Monday from rush to sign, but they’ve got it all straightened out now. Needless to say, still no mention of this in the MSM. That damn liberal media!

Go Sign Wexler’s Petition

I urge everyone to go here and sign the petition for impeachment hearings.

From Raw Story:

As the House Judiciary Committee continues to refuse any action on proposals to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney, three of that panel’s members tried to take their case to influential op-ed pages of the nation’s largest newspapers.

They were turned down by every one — including the New York Times, Washington Post and Miami Herald — so now one of the lawmakers has taken his campaign to the Internet.

Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL) on Friday launched a new Web site, WexlerWantsHearings.com to advance his call to impeach Cheney. The site hosts an op-ed article censored by the nation’s major newspapers and outlines the case for impeaching Cheney.

“The truth is the mainstream media have no interest in this issue,” Wexler said Friday.

“They have bought into the notion that impeachment hearings are outside the bounds of what the congress ought to be doing,” the six-term Congressman elaborated during a conference call Friday.

The Op-ed that wasn’t published:

A CASE FOR HEARINGS
By Representatives and Members of the Judiciary Committee:
Robert Wexler (D-FL), Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI)

On November 7, the House of Representatives voted to send a resolution of impeachment of Vice President Cheney to the Judiciary Committee. As Members of the House Judiciary Committee, we strongly believe these important hearings should begin.

The issues at hand are too serious to ignore, including credible allegations of abuse of power that if proven may well constitute high crimes and misdemeanors under our constitution. The charges against Vice President Cheney relate to his deceptive actions leading up to the Iraq war, the revelation of the identity of a covert agent for political retaliation, and the illegal wiretapping of American citizens.

Now that former White House press secretary Scott McClellan has indicated that the Vice President and his staff purposefully gave him false information about the outing of Valerie Plame Wilson as a covert agent to report to the American people, it is even more important for Congress to investigate what may have been an intentional obstruction of justice. Congress should call Mr. McClellan to testify about what he described as being asked to “unknowingly [pass] along false information.” In addition, recent revelations have shown that the Administration including Vice President Cheney may have again manipulated and exaggerated evidence about weapons of mass destruction — this time about Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

Some of us were in Congress during the impeachment hearings of President Clinton. We spent a year and a half listening to testimony about President Clinton’s personal relations. This must not be the model for impeachment inquires. A Democratic Congress can show that it takes its constitutional authority seriously and hold a sober investigation, which will stand in stark contrast to the kangaroo court convened by Republicans for President Clinton. In fact, the worst legacy of the Clinton impeachment - where the GOP pursued trumped up and insignificant allegations - would be that it discourages future Congresses from examining credible and significant allegations of a constitutional nature when they arise.

Kucinich Welcomes Support from Judiciary Committee Members on Impeachment

Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich’s push to initiate impeachment hearings against Vice President Richard B. Cheney received a significant boost today when three of his Democratic Congressional colleagues, all members of the House Judiciary Committee, endorsed Kucinichs call for action.

In a joint public announcement today, Representatives Robert Wexler, Luis Gutierrez, and Tammy Baldwin said, The charges are too serious to ignore. There is credible evidence that the Vice President abused the power of his office, and not only brought us into an unnecessary war but violated the civil liberties and privacy of American citizens. It is the constitutional duty of Congress to hold impeachment hearings.

Kucinich is the only Democratic Presidential candidate who has called for impeachment proceedings. The other candidates have either dodged the issue or deferred to the comments of the Democratic Congressional leadership that the impeachment issue is off the table.

I appreciate the support of my good friends in this effort to hold our highest elected officials accountable, under the Constitution of the United States of America, for their violations and abuses of their sworn oaths to the Constitution and to the people of this nation, Kucinich said. With the continuing drumbeat from the Administration toward a possible war with Iran, the need for hearings is more urgent than ever.

Kucinich introduced the impeachment resolution on April 24, 2007; and, last month, brought it to the floor of the House, where members voted to refer it to the Judiciary Committee for further consideration. The call to action by three Democratic members of that Committee might help move it out of the hopper and onto the calendar.

Kucinich will be campaigning in New Hampshire this weekend.

Time for Civil Disobedience

Yep, my brother is right. It’s time for civil disobedience. His comment on a post:’

This Administration is no different than any other organized criminal enterprise, whether it be the Mafia or your typical street gang, in that the key to stopping snitchs or defectors is having them commit, or at the least be a co-conspirator or accessory to a crime to ensure they stay within the fold. For reasons only they themselves know, some members of Congress made some very stupid decisions making them complicit in the crimes of the Bush/Cheney Administration that sealed their fate in the fold, some of which are now being exposed. Pelosi and the other members of Congress who were informed of the torture years ago and did nothing about it then, when they could and legally should have, lends alot of credibility to my reasoning, doesn-t it? How could they possibly prosecute this now without incriminating themselves? They can-t. It’s like being in the mafia or a street gang, once you-re in, you-re in for good, there is no way out without incriminating yourself. Their newly exposed complicity in these crimes (torture was and still is a crime) is inexcusable, unethical, immoral and in direct contradiction to their sworn oath to the Constitution and Bill of Rights and should also be considered a criminal impeachable offense. There is no fucking excuse for this shit. NONE. Following their rationale would be like a cop looking the other way and ignoring a criminal in the act of a crime and then when the criminal comes back later and tells you he’s going to destroy evidence of his crime you don-t do anything but tell him not to destroy it. Would that be acceptable? Hell no, the cop should be fired for malfeasance and dereliction of duty and possibly charged with obstruction of justice, and being an accessory before and after the crime. No wonder Pelosi threw impeachment off the table as if it were plague ridden, considering these latest revelations she would possibly be impeaching herself. Me thinks it might be time for some good old fashioned civil disobedience. They want to ignore the rule of law and live in a lawless society, why don-t we join them?

Some of today’s headlines:

Lawmakers vote to hold Bolten and Rove in contempt (any bets it won’t pass in the senate?)

More beating the drum about Iran

House votes to outlaw waterboarding (It’s already fucking criminal, what don’t you dipshits get?)

UN Rights envoy suspects torture at Guantanemo

Senate Republicans block energy bill. (it was blocked because the Republicans want the want the tax increases to oil companies removed. It’s going to be removed and passed tomorrow)

I could go on and on…..but you get my drift.

Today’s Must-Read

Yes: I TOLD YOU SO

[...]The primary subject about which I would have such thoughts is the one that ought to concern everyone, the only subject that matters now in terms of what it could mean for the future of the world, and of the United States: the probability of an attack on Iran.
[...]

[Impeachment] is the one method the Democrats will categorically, absolutely not utilize — because the Democrats are a crucial, inextricable part of the identical authoritarian-corporatist system that has led us to these horrors. They have all worked toward this end over many decades, Democrats and Republicans alike, and now the horrors manifest themselves explicitly, without apology, even with the sickening boastfulness of the mass murderer who is proud of what he has done, and who vehemently believes he is right.
