If you missed John Kerry’s fantastic performance on ABC, check out the whole thing:
Here’s the transcript.
There are many storylines swirling around how McCain arrived at picking Palin, but they’re not mutually exclusive. She was in fact favored by the authoritarian religious right, who McCain sought to court. In one report, Rick Davis was pushing for her, and he’s probably been the McCain staffer most intent on pushing the bullshit about Obama and the Democrats being elitists; she’s potential bait for ratcheting up the GOP’s campaign of spite. (Hey, look at Bush, who needs to be qualified to be president?) Meanwhile, McCain’s pick was impulsive and reckless. His campaign is only really vetting her now, after she’d already been picked!
Let me also recommend a few Obsidian Wings posts on the subject, and what they show about McCain. Here’s Hilzoy:

Hasn’t the moron already caused a refugee and genocidal crisis? We’re already there you idiot. And why doesn’t the VFW have an actual VETERAN speak at their convention?
Not surprisingly, Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) didn’t like President Bush’s speech today in which the commander-in-chief, speaking at the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Kansas City, warned that quitting Iraq too soon would repeat the mistakes of leaving Vietnam, creating a refugee and genocidal crisis.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 22, 2007
Kerry Statement on Bush Speech to the VFW
BOSTON - Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) today made the following statement in response to the speech today by President Bush to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Kansas City, Missouri in which the President invoked comparisons to the Vietnam War to defend his war policy:
“Invoking the tragedy of Vietnam to defend the failed policy in Iraq is as irresponsible as it is ignorant of the realities of both of those wars,” Senator Kerry said. “Half of the soldiers whose names are on the Vietnam Memorial Wall died after the politicians knew our strategy would not work. The lesson is to change the strategy not just to change the rhetoric.
We want democracy in Iraq, but Iraqis must want it as much as we do. Our brave soldiers can-t bring democracy to Iraq if Iraq’s leaders are unable or unwilling themselves to make the compromises that democracy requires. No American soldier should be sacrificed because Iraqi politicians refuse to resolve their sectarian and political differences.
“It is unfortunate that President Bush would want to invoke a false comparison of Vietnam to Iraq, but not surprising that he would oversimplify the differences and overlook the tragic similarities. As in Vietnam, we engaged militarily in Iraq based on official deception. As in Vietnam, more American soldiers are being sent to fight and die in a civil war we can-t stop and an insurgency we can-t bomb into submission. If the President wants to heed the lessons of Vietnam, he should change course and change course now.”

Sen. John Kerry was in Austin promoting his new book on Sunday. Kerry co-authored the book with his wife Teresa. The couple signed copies and answered questions.
Kerry even poked fun at the e-mails regarding the firing of eight U.S. attorney generals.
“So we’ve written this book, 254 pages, recycled it out of Alberto Gonzalez attorney general’s e-mails,” said Kerry.
A portion of the sales were donated to the Save Our Springs Alliance.

It’s really a damn shame though. He is a good man. And would have made a great leader. After being swiftboated during his 2004 campaign and failing to answer the Republican criticisms leveled at him, Kerry lost much of his political support.
I wonder why Kerry didn’t attempt legal action against those involved in his swiftboating? These ‘critics’ used false information to cause Kerry to lose his presidential bid. Looks like an open and shut case. Am I wrong?

Kerry to bow out of presidential race
WASHINGTON - Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, the Democrats’ losing presidential candidate in 2004, does not intend to run again in 2008, a Democratic official said Wednesday.
This official said Kerry intends to seek a new six-year term in the Senate. bows out 2008 election
…
In a CNN/ORC poll released Wednesday, 51 percent of Democrats said they would not like to see Kerry run in 2008. When asked who they would support, only 5 percent said Kerry, placing him fifth and far behind leader Clinton at 33 percent.

If it can be shown that any 527 spread lies to effect change in an election, that 527 should be fined to hell and back, and it’s highest members imprisoned.
Swift Boat Vets, related groups to face big fines
Monday December 11, 2006
Just in time for the 2008 presidential campaign season and roughly two years after the agency began scrutinizing a handful of 527 organizations, the Federal Election Commission is likely to hand down significant fines in the near future against groups such as America Coming Together and Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, according to campaign finance lawyers and other experts.
Agency officials and outsiders directly involved in the cases declined to discuss specifics of the investigations, citing confidentiality agreements and prohibitions against discussing ongoing enforcement matters. Still, many familiar with the cases- issues, including the top lawyer for Sen. John Kerry’s (D-Mass.) 2004 campaign and a former commission chairman, suggested that a variety of factors point to the likelihood that the agency will soon “sock it” to 527 organizations that violated campaign finance laws, particularly those involved in the 2004 presidential cycle.
“They don-t have a lot of choice,” said Marc Elias, a Democratic campaign finance lawyer who worked for the Kerry campaign. “It’s been two years that they-ve had these cases and they have indicated publicly that the enforcement process is the way” the agency prefers to police 527 groups.
While agency officials were unable to indicate the status of ongoing investigations, they were able to confirm a number of organizations when asked about specific groups that complaints had been filed against, perhaps narrowing the field of potential cases that may be closed out in the weeks to come. Among those cited as being the subject of complaints were Texans for Truth, Progress for America Voter Fund, Leadership Forum, the Media Fund, the Joint Victory Campaign, Economic Freedom Fund and Majority Action.

H/T to my Australian friend, Scottie! Hopefully the U.S. will advance this research soon!
The Patterson Bill gives Australian scientists an opportunity to fully explore every aspect of embryonic stem cell research. Significant work and progress has been made under the current law which allows for human embryonic stem cell research under licence.
The bill allows the introduction of somatic cell nuclear transfer, otherwise know as therapeutic cloning. This technology enables the development of human, disease’specific embryonic stem cell lines. How does this work, and why is it so valuable?
The process begins by taking the nucleus from a cell - for example, a skin or blood cell - of a patient who has a complex disease, such as Parkinson’s or leukaemia. This nucleus is then placed in an ovum which has had its nucleus removed. The environment of the egg helps form a blastocyst, which is an early’stage embryo containing a few hundred cells from which scientists can grow a human embryonic stem cell line that carries the trait of the disease. These cells may then be directed to form the relevant cell types of the disease under investigation.

Just found this post over at Transparent Grid. Excellent site… definitely check them out!
Should John Kerry Just Shut Up?
It is a rarity when a politician is able to successfully tell a joke (only Reagan could truly do it well). Biting comments directed at the opposition in front of a loyal audience don-t matter, because seals clap at anything. Kerry’s verbal attempt at humor at Bush’s expense was very different from his prepared text - which underscores to not adlib unless you-re Bill Clinton - which ended with “you get us stuck in Iraq” rather than “you will be stuck in Iraq.” As said, one could reasonably and politically interpret the inartful phraseology as denigrating the troops when the context of what was said and who was talking completely belies that claim.
Despite Media Matters best efforts, the truth doesn-t matter. It takes too long to explain and at least part of the debate has already been framed with a general media consensus that Kerry messed up. Fine, get over it Democrats and move on. Here is how:
#1 Stop talking about it. Remember Cheney’s water dunking comment last week? Right - it is barely registering. What about the liberal outrage at Bush’s press club skit of looking for WMD under his sofa cushion? The point is that Republicans don-t talk about their screwups. Nothing is helped by either engaging in this debate on left-leaning blogs, like this one, or on progressive radio. We are not the voters which will be swayed by this ibroglio anyway. A snippy, “John Kerry’s record speaks for itself, now let’s talk about the important issues,” will do. Media Matters, for example, is wasting gobs of time by pointing out how this MSM member and that is mischaracterizing Kerry. Stop it, David Brock! Focus on the George Allen’s goon squad or something.
#2 Conversely, this is not the time to equivocate. Even if one thinks Kerry botched this in a massive way, it doesn-t help to be all intellectually fair about it and say so in public. Stay on message unless you-re in a district where you need to toss him overboard , but then do so quietly.
#3 Flip, flip, flip. Remember the Karl Rove tactic - attack them at their perceived strenght and make it their biggest weakness. Kerry handled himself ably yesterday when he turned on the GOP message machine (their strength) and questioned the President’s honor by trying to drag Kerry through the mud. By flipping, I mean to turn the argument against the GOP, for example, “To think that Kerry was denigrating the troops is ludicrous, he was talking about a president who didn-t know that there were both Shi-ites and Sunnis living in Iraq before the invasion, let alone did he understand the difference.” Or - “Look, this administration is either grossly callous or completely incompetent - after 9/11 they said, A-no one imagined that terrorists would fly planes into the World Trade Center- (wrong); after the invasion of Iraq we find out they didn-t plan for an insurgency, didn-t see it coming; after Katrina, A-no imagined that the levies would be breached.- I can-t imagine anyone being that uncaring about what happens to other Americans, including our soldiers, so the administration must be ignorant and incompetent.” Final example, “While the GOP’s media army marches in lock’step, the voters want to know when our troops are coming home and if they-ll be properly fed, protected and cared for before they do.”
I-m bored with this “topic,” so let’s get back to what matters, winning the election.
