Man oh man……. you gotta love this.
Dara Torres, a 41-year-old mother who won her first Olympic gold medal the year before Michael Phelps was born, capped the U.S. Swimming Trials yesterday by earning a spot in a second event at the Beijing Games.
Torres won the women’s 50-meter freestyle in a time of 24.25 seconds at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Nebraska, to eclipse the U.S. record she set the previous day in the semifinals. Torres clinched a spot on her record fifth Olympic team on July 4 by winning the 100m freestyle.
“I can’t lie and say, `Oh, I’m just glad I’m going,”’ said Torres, whose 2-year-old daughter Tessa accompanied her to the award stand. “I want a medal.”
Torres said after yesterday’s race that she planned to meet with U.S. head coach Mark Schubert about whether she should sit out the 100m freestyle in Beijing to give her a better chance at winning the 50m.
Torres is 26 years older than 15-year-old Elizabeth Beisel, the youngest Olympian on this year’s 43-member U.S. team, and only one other swimmer on the squad is over the age of 30.

Being a swimmer, I’ve been really excited watching the Olympic trials. I love Katie Hoff.
Wow, that kid from suburban Baltimore is something.
No, we’re not talking about Michael Phelps.
Nineteen-year-old Katie Hoff stole the show at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials, winning two events about 45 minutes apart Wednesday night - and setting new American records in both.

Ok, my least favorite team……but I’ll suck it up and give them their congrats. Ugh……
From the Washington Post:
Maybe it’s enough to say that it was an honest effort. At the close of a year of disheartening sports scandals, the New York Giants and the New England Patriots gave us all a gift: they refused to tank. With nothing at stake except a record, a piece of history, and some personal honor, they played to win. The result wasn’t just history, it was a beauty.
After months of investigations, corruptions, fallen idols and dirty referees, it was difficult to trust even the score of a tennis match. You could be pardoned if you had somewhat jaundiced, sour expectations for this season-ending game between the Patriots and the Giants. It need not have amounted to much: both teams had clinched NFL playoff spots, and had every excuse to rest their starters and to cheat the audience. Instead, the starters actually started — and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and the Giants’ Eli Manning were still dueling at the bitter finish of the game. A crowd of 79,110 rose to its feet when Manning struck Plaxico Burress with a 52-yard pass on just the second play from scrimmage, signaling that the Giants meant business. The crowd was still on its feet late in the fourth quarter of this electrifying contest, as Brady rallied the Patriots from 12 points down, their biggest deficit of the season, to pull out a 38-35 victory.

Football joke of the day…….my apologizes to blondes.
A guy took his blonde girlfriend to her first football game.
They had great seats right behind their team’s bench.
After the game, he asked her how she liked the experience.
“Oh, I really liked it,” she replied, “especially the tight pants and all
the big muscles but I just couldn’t understand why they were killing each other over 25 cents.”
Dumbfounded, her date asked, “What do you mean?”
“Well, they flipped a coin, one team got it and then for the rest of the
game, all they kept screaming was ‘Get the quarterback! Get the quarterback!’
“I’m like ……. Helloooooo? It’s only 25 cents!!!”

Da Bears……..Da Bears……….Da Bears!
Only in Florida………
Miami, FL (AP) - A seven-year-old Hialeah, Florida boy was at the center of a Miami courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible. The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out they also beat him. After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him. After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Miami Dolphins, whom the boy and the judge firmly believe are not capable of beating anyone.

From the Sports Network:
Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has been selected as Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year.
Favre is having one of the best seasons of his 17-year career for the 10-2 Packers. He’s completed 67.4 percent of his passes for 3,412 yards with 22 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
In addition, he’s already broken Dan Marino’s NFL records for career touchdown passes and pass attempts. Favre broke Marino’s mark of 420 career TD passes on September 30 against Minnesota and is just 450 yards shy of Marino’s all-time mark of 61,361 passing yards.
Favre’s off-the-field charitable contributions include his Fourward Foundation’s work toward helping in the Gulf Coast’s recovery from Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
The three-time NFL MVP became the fourth quarterback selected as Sportsman of the Year, following Terry Bradshaw in 1979, Joe Montana in 1990 and Tom Brady in 2005.

The newest addition at my house. This is Cyd Vicious. 3 lbs. of trouble.
Now football…….how bout those Dolphins? They’re on the road to breaking another record. First team to not win a single game. At this point I feel sorry for them……..next Monday night they play the Steelers. Weird stuff in the Cleveland game. Ball hit the field goal and then bounced back onto the field. After review it was determined it is a field goal so they’re going into overtime. Go Cleveland go!!!
